This council journey in early autumn of 1967, when General Agent Jim McCue held an organizational meeting at St. David’s Parish Hall. Also attending were Brother Knights Father John Ronquest, founding Paster of St. David’s (Since that time he has been named a Monsignor), Ron Buchheit, Bob Kunkel, Ferd Lang, and George Brimshaw representing Kimmswick Council #2333.
In November of same year, the first degree was conducted at Kirkwood Council #2117 to initiate the Council #6018’s new members. The degree team consisted of Jim McCue and Bob Karznia.
The Council held their business meetings in rented spaces at Becker Myer Becker VFW Post 2593 (Located where Arnold Commons presently recedes). Fred Lang then offered the use of the basement of the Fendler Funeral Home on Jeffco Blvd. The next move was to a place the council could almost its own. This place was unused, unfinished space in the basement of the insurance office owned by Bob Edwards on Jeffco Blvd. Council Members converted the space into a small meeting room and even smaller club room.
The Council’s next move involved a major purchase by our home association, the Arnold Club. The Arnold Lions were building their new hall, bringing their old home on Hollywood Beach Road up for sale. This brought about the first serious disagreement between the members. After much debate, the decision was made to purchase the property. Past disagreements were quickly forgotten. The membership pitched in to provide a fresh coat of paint, new wiring, lights, and new furnace to get the new home ready for use. The use of the new hall was short lived. The flood of 1973 hit the Meramec River and destroyed the hall. The council then moved their meetings to Immaculate Conception’s Parish Hall (in 2024 changed to Holy Family Parish when both St. David and Immaculate Conception was joined together under all things new). A parcel of property on Telegraph Road was purchased with the intention of building a new hall. Over these following years, various building plans where reviewed but, ground was never broken. In 1979, the present hall was up for sale. Much discussion and dissension again took place, and the property purchase was completed in 1980.
In 2005 the present hall was remodeled by members of the Council and the work made the hall more presentable for meetings, weddings, showers, and other activities. Then in 2024 the hall went through another remodeling project which was to make the restroom more ADA accessible.
Since its inception in 1967, Pope John XXIII Council 6018 has been active in Supreme, State, and Local Activities. We have had State Chairman and in 1999-2000 we had the honor of having Tony Braum to hold the office of State Deputy. We have received many awards and recognitions. The greatest honor of this council is that in the past years even during COVID-19 the council was being able to donate over $40,000.00 to help our brother and sisters in our community and to support our parishes to promote our moral duties in our Faith. We have never looked back. We eagerly look forward to the future. The Past Grand Knights and our Ladies Auxiliary Presidents express a sincere Thank you for Past efforts and accomplishments to all brother Knights, Wives, Families, Friends, Clergy, State Officers, and District Deputies of Pope John XXIII Council 6018.
